My Art Beats + Lyrics DC experience

Posted by on

As an artist I’m always on the lookout for art shows that I would like to be a part of. I’ll put a few on my radar, catalog it my mind and move on. Art Beats + Lyrics has been on my radar for a while. I first got hip to AB+L several years ago from an article in a publication. I read about this guy who was a artist, got laid off and used his severance check to host his idea art show, He acquired Jack Daniels as a sponsor and it was a traveling art show! I thought it sounded cool.

Several years later I found myself in a similar situation. I quit my job and decided to pursue my art career full time. Through the circle of artist I move around with in Atlanta I organically crossed paths with the curator of AB+L. I was hanging out at City of Ink and Miya Bailey asked me to drop off his painting for ABL 2016, Mister Soul rode with me to the warehouse where the art and walls were stored. Soul introduced me to Dubeyoo. “What up, I’m EuGene Byrd I’m just dropping off Miya’s Art” I kept it short and sweet. “PEACE”, and I’m out. Driving off, I thought “Okay cool, that’s the curator of AB+L.”

Now it’s 2017, I’m hanging out with Jamaal Barber at Atlanta Printmakers Studio and he asked me to ride with him to pick up his art from AB+L 2016. Now here I am talking to Dubeyoo, the curator of AB+L AGAIN. I’m like okay, let me just ask him about me being in the show. “So...what do I got to do to be a part of the show? I’m an artist, blah, blah blah”, we chopped it up, talked about hiking and traveling and things that we’re both interested in, and everything seemed cool, so now I’m aggressively pursuing trying to be in the show, cause I can't front, I've wanted to be a part of the show for years now and I’m starting to think it’s meant to be. It’s a traveling Art show, representing Atlanta, why wouldn’t I want to be a part of that?!

"AB+L can bring people together in a way that the avenge show just can’t, it was beautiful."

So the vibe is cool, and I’m plotting to get a Future Dead Artists wall up for my whole crew, cause I know we would kill it, but it’s so last minute, Dubeyoo wasn’t planning on any new walls but he did have space for a piece. I sent him some of my work and my painting, ‘Elevation’ really stood out to him. But of course, I no longer had that painting cause it sold. I tried to sale him on another painting, but he really liked that one. I told him I could create another one similar, I had just one week to finish the painting…Challenge? (I finished the painting, on time of course) and after dropping off and picking up other artist’s paintings for AB+L, now I’ll finally dropping off my own artwork, SWEET!

I see the cities and dates and I notice the Washington D.C. date coming up. I have family in DC, so I told Danyell, “Lets all go to DC for this art show, travel, see family, it’ll be fun” So last minute, Danyell, our daughter and I fly out to DC. We had a great time and I got exactly what I wanted from the show. Every art show is different and I participate in shows for different reasons. Sometimes it’s about the money, the venue, promotion, caliber of other artists etc. I understood AB+L was a party atmosphere, so sales wasn’t my main concern, but the show has a rep for featuring the art well and I loved that fact the show traveled. Just by being apart of this one art show, I can now say I have shown my art in ten different cities. I can attend a few cities and get a feel of the art screen in other regions and get feedback from the crowd about my art, all though this one art show...Priceless. Plus it’s an excuse to travel.

The night of the show I felt great! The people of DC were feeling my painting and I felt right at home surrounded with the art of my Atlanta artist family, Miya Bailey, Kaya Faery, Goldi Gold, C Flux Sing, Dan Flores, Sheree Swann, Kat Goduco, Artemus Jenkins, Fabian Williams, Charly Palmer just to name a few. A-town was representing and everybody in DC was showing Atlanta a lot of love and respect. Jeremy Avalon killed his set and DRES Tha BEATnik did his thang as host just as I watched him do for 20 years now. AB+L REALLY reps Atlanta well and I’m thankful to be a part of it, that’s what it’s all about.

During the show, I bumped into a old friend from college, that now resides in DC. I invited one of my art collectors that live in DC. And my family got to experience me during an art show and share a piece of my world. They would have never gotten that opportunity if it weren’t for AB+L. Not only did I get my own family experience, I got to witness Dubelyoo’s family experience as well. I got the pleasure of meeting his parents and sister who drove to attend the show. It was nice to witness. Art is family. AB+L can bring people together in a way that the avenge show just can’t, it was beautiful.

I’m so proud to be apart of the AB+L family, the art was amazing, vibe and energy was good, drinks were on point, music was perfect…So yeah, Future Dead Artists is now part of Arts Beats + Lyrics…ill.
